The other night, I drove the babysitter home after her first time watching our kids. I wanted to get to know her a bit better, so I asked her how things are going in college.
She admitted that she had recently decided the major she had started with wasn’t what she wanted to pursue. I could tell she felt guilty about this, as though she should already have it all “figured out.”
This got me thinking… why do we feel that way? Isn’t it much more valuable to know what you DON’T want to do as soon as possible, so you can refocus on something better? Yet so many of us stay stuck right where we are, because there’s some kind of social “stigma” associated with quitting something or shifting gears.
Want to know the truth?
“Jumping ship” to pursue what you’re passionate about isn’t easy or comfortable. But it’s far, far worse to stick to a path you’re not happy with just because it’s the path you’ve always been on.
